Sony Won't Backtrack on Its PlayStation Disc Phase-Out Plan, Officially Responds to Backlash
PlayStation’s biggest controversy this year finally has an official response from Sony. After weeks of protests, petitions, online backlash, and planned #PSBlackout campaign, the company has publicly defended its decision to end physical game disc production. The company says the move reflects a much bigger industry shift. It also believes physical discs are no longer what separates PlayStation from the competition.
Sony says the digital shift goes beyond PlayStation
During Sony’s latest earnings call, CFO Lin Tao addressed the controversy surrounding the company’s previously announced plan to stop producing physical PlayStation game discs in 2028. According to Kotaku, Tao said the decision was driven by the broader digital transformation of media, not just gaming.
She explained that Sony spent considerable time evaluating the long-term direction of the market before reaching its conclusion. According to Tao, digital content continues to grow across multiple industries, making the transition a natural step for the company. That said, Tao acknowledged the strong community reaction.
She said Sony understands that games carry emotional value and often represent lasting memories for players. The company intends to keep exploring ways to strengthen its relationship with gamers as the digital ecosystem continues evolving.
Physical releases aren’t disappearing entirely
Speaking of retail, Sony also addressed concerns about brick-and-mortar stores and future console differentiation. Tao said Sony continues working closely with regional retail partners to ensure both sides benefit from the transition. She also confirmed that GTA 6-style code-in-box releases will continue, allowing retailers to keep selling boxed PlayStation games even after physical discs are phased out.
