Sony to Discontinue Physical PlayStation Game Discs Starting January 2028
Physical game collections are about to take another major hit. Sony has officially confirmed that it will stop producing physical discs for all newly released PlayStation games starting in January 2028.
The announcement means any game launching from January 2028 onward will no longer receive a traditional Blu-ray disc release. Rather, new PlayStation titles will be distributed digitally via the PlayStation Store and retail partners using digital purchase formats.
Sony clarified that the decision only affects games launching after January 2028. Existing titles and games scheduled to release before that deadline will continue shipping on physical discs as originally planned.
According to Sony, the decision comes from changing consumer habits rather than a sudden strategy shift. The company says digital purchases have now become the preferred way for most PlayStation players to buy games, which makes physical media a much smaller part of the overall business than it once was.
Speaking of retailers, Sony also emphasized that players will still have options on where they purchase games. While physical discs are disappearing, retailers won’t disappear from the equation. Rather, stores will continue selling digital versions of PlayStation games alongside purchases made directly through the PlayStation Store.
