Steam reaches 40 million concurrent online gamers

Back in December last year, Steam had 39 million online concurrent users, but now, according to the latest charts, they reached the 40 million mark. That peak activity is bigger than the number of people in most countries in the world, and a new landmark proving that PC gaming strongly outpaced console gaming.

To be fair, this peak number that was achieved during the weekend totals all the gamers that were using the Steam platform at a particular moment. According to The Gamer, only 12,812,379 users were actually playing a game. The rest were just browsing through their libraries, chatting, or doing other things. They added that the top games that were played during the 40 million event were Counter-Strike 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, Dota 2, and others.

For years, Steam has been the go-to platform for gamers around the globe. From blockbuster releases to indie gems, it’s been where people gather, chat, trade, and debate the latest game strategies. Now, with 40 million users online simultaneously, it’s clear that the platform’s influence is only growing. Whether it’s during big sales events, major game launches, or just a typical busy evening, Steam’s numbers keep setting new standards.

Steam is definitely not perfect. It had, has, and will have a lot of issues, but it stayed strong when developers included AI-generated graphics without acknowledging that. It has clearly became the gathering place for the majority of PC gamers worldwide and it’s probably going to be that way for a long time.
