As The Outerheaven writes, Bandai Namco has officially revealed Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, a new action RPG set in the iconic world of Aincrad. The game takes a different approach from previous titles by letting players experience the story from a completely new perspective rather than playing as Kirito.

The upcoming RPG focuses entirely on Aincrad, the original setting that launched the Sword Art Online series. Many fans have long requested a full RPG experience centered around surviving the deadly floating castle, and the new title aims to deliver exactly that.

Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad Offers a Fresh Perspective Inside Aincrad

Unlike most previous Sword Art Online games, Echoes of Aincrad does not place players in the role of Kirito. Instead, players will create their own character and explore Aincrad from a fresh point of view within the world.

The idea of living through Aincrad as a different player has appeared before in Sword Art Online: Integral Factor, a mobile title that explored a similar concept. However, that game was limited by the mobile platform. Echoes of Aincrad aims to expand the idea into a full action RPG designed for modern consoles and PC.

Real-time combat and deep character progression

Echoes of Aincrad will feature real-time action combat combined with RPG progression systems. Players will be able to upgrade weapons, equipment, attributes, and special skills to develop their own preferred playstyle.

Customization plays a major role in the gameplay loop. As players progress through Aincrad’s dangerous floors, they can refine their builds and unlock new abilities that improve combat performance and survivability.

Two-character party system

The game introduces a unique two-character party structure. Players select a single NPC partner to accompany them during missions.

Each partner brings unique abilities and customizable skills that influence combat strategy. As players spend more time fighting alongside their partner, their bond grows stronger, unlocking new skills and more powerful abilities.

Traditional Sword Art Online parties often consist of four members, so the two-character format could increase both difficulty and specialization during encounters.

However, the reveal trailer hints that two-player teams may sometimes join other groups. This could suggest co-op features or four-player mission scenarios where multiple teams combine forces.

Release date and platforms

Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad is scheduled to launch on July 10, 2026. The game will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

In other gaming developments, Slay the Spire 2 recently entered Early Access and quickly surged in popularity. The launch appears to have impacted Marathon on Steam, where player counts dropped shortly after the deck-building sequel became available.

Meanwhile, this weekend’s Xbox Free Play Days lineup has also been revealed, giving players a chance to try additional titles for free for a limited time.
