Teams Browser Calls Are Getting Better, but Google Calendar Sync Is Going Away

Microsoft Teams browser calls are getting a useful upgrade, with Microsoft preparing a dedicated pop-out call window for web users. At the same time, the company plans to retire its Google Workspace calendar synchronization later this year.

Microsoft is adding a pop-out call window to the browser version of Teams, bringing the web experience closer to the desktop app.

Users will be able to move an active call into a simplified browser window and continue working in other tabs or applications. The smaller window will keep the video feed visible and provide access to essential meeting controls.

Microsoft tracks the feature under Roadmap ID 569206, with rollout currently planned for October 2026.

Microsoft is ending Google Workspace calendar synchronization

Microsoft is also retiring calendar synchronization between Teams and Google Workspace after October 2026, according to MC1462469.

Existing integrations will stop synchronizing after the cutoff, meaning organizations that currently rely on the connection will need to move to another solution.

Microsoft recommends switching to the Microsoft Teams Meeting add-on for Google Workspace. The add-on allows Google Workspace users to continue adding and managing Teams meetings within their existing workflow.

IT admins need to prepare users

Microsoft recommends that IT administrators begin notifying affected users ahead of the October deadline.

Admins should also retrieve any account matching information they need through the Admin app in Teams and prepare users who still require Google Workspace integration to switch to the Teams Meeting add-on.

Microsoft has several other Teams changes in development. The company is working on a feature that will automatically block external meeting bots, while another integration will allow GitHub Copilot to turn Teams chats into code.

Elsewhere, Microsoft recently delayed the Whiteboard retirement, giving users more time before the service reaches its revised deadlines.
