Whiteboard Retirement Delayed as Microsoft Extends Deadlines

Microsoft has delayed the Microsoft Whiteboard retirement, giving personal and enterprise users more time to migrate their content before several key deadlines arrive.

The company previously said Whiteboard would stop working for personal accounts in August and later shared a broader retirement timeline. Microsoft also recently warned Whiteboard users to migrate their data.

However, Microsoft has now pushed back several deadlines, according to the updated Message Center advisory MC1441775.

Personal Microsoft Whiteboard accounts get another month

Microsoft will now end support for Whiteboard on personal accounts on September 25, 2026.

The same September 25 deadline also applies to the migration tools available to enterprise customers. This gives users roughly another month to move their Whiteboard content before Microsoft removes access to those services.

Legacy Whiteboard deletion moves to October

Microsoft also delayed the permanent deletion of legacy Whiteboards.

The company originally planned to delete legacy Whiteboards and their associated data on September 5. Microsoft has now moved that deadline to October 16, 2026.

Once Microsoft deletes that content, users will not be able to recover it.

Standalone Whiteboard app retirement delayed until November

Organizations also have more time before Microsoft removes the standalone Whiteboard app.

Microsoft previously planned to deprecate the standalone app on September 14. The company has now moved the retirement date to November 30, 2026.

That change gives businesses more than two additional months to prepare users and update existing workflows.

Enterprise Whiteboards are moving to OneDrive

Microsoft continues to migrate enterprise customers from Azure-backed Whiteboards to OneDrive-backed Whiteboards.

The OneDrive architecture gives organizations stronger compliance, governance, and security controls while bringing Whiteboard storage closer to Microsoft’s broader Microsoft 365 file infrastructure.

Microsoft hasn’t explained the delay

Microsoft has not provided a specific reason for changing the Whiteboard retirement schedule.

The revised timeline nevertheless gives personal users and organizations additional time to migrate content, update workflows, and prepare for the removal of Microsoft’s older Whiteboard infrastructure.
