demand for windows foldable phone

We have had several foldable phones to date, and while the idea did strike a chord with many, they weren’t as big a success as we thought, at least right now!

The reason is that they don’t offer any value other than a bigger display. It’s not cost-effective, per se.

But when we recently came across a Reddit post discussing a foldable Windows phone, it got us thinking. This could be a device I would go for!

It’s a concept handheld device that uses the same operating system as your desktop, provides all the functionalities, and is more user-friendly. This is basically a full-fledged handheld PC!

It could have all the native apps and the Microsoft Store to install more, a similar Settings interface, a built-in antivirus like Windows Security for protection, the new File Explorer, and command line tools to perform advanced operations within seconds.

Also, it should let users plug in a keyboard and mouse, maybe wirelessly. But this is a critical requirement. The idea is not too far-fetched. You can connect a mouse and keyboard after installing Windows 11 on Steam Deck.

Besides, a seamless gaming experience will go a long way in making Windows foldable phones a success. The handheld console market is kind of saturated, and even the new entrants don’t offer any exciting features. But if a phone could let you play all those PC games on the go, who wouldn’t want it, right?

What do people think of a foldable Windows phone?

When we checked what others had to say, they were as excited about the prospects of a foldable Windows phone. Here’s what some people wrote:

Seems like a perfect time for Microsoft to re-enter the mobile market. It’s super saturated now with hundreds of mid iPhones and sub-par Android phones, and basically anything new in the market will get great attention.

I’d stand in the queue overnight to be the first one to buy a windows phone at that store if MS releases their Windows Phones again.

I want desktop OS on a folding phone. That kind of phone is what a price tag of iPhone is justified.

I wish Microsoft releases a Windows phone. But I don’t think that is going to happen. I will definitely get one or even more if they releases now.

The only concerns people had were with app support and foldable screen functionality!

App support has to be exceptional, and it can’t be constrained. A Windows phone must be able to run any applications that Android or iOS can.

Secondly, Microsoft’s previous venture into foldable phones, Surface Duo 2, wasn’t a success because it wasn’t really a foldable phone but had two screens hinged to one another. So, it was neither optimal for gaming nor streaming with that wide gap in the middle!

If Microsoft could get that right and re-enter the ecosystem with a foldable Windows phone, preferably Windows 11, that would change the market dynamics. There will be far too many takers for it, including me!
