Gears 5, the 6th installment of the Gears of War series is now available for download on both PC and Xbox.

For those of you who want to try the game on PC, you have two ways of acquiring it:

  1. Download it through the Microsoft App Store
  2. Download it through the Steam Client

However, users who downloaded the game through Steam have reported that they sometimes cannot launch the game, and are instead presented with an error message labelled:

Unrecognized game client. Cannot continue.

This isn’t a problem limited to just Gears 5, as plenty of other games downloaded through Steam or other gaming platforms experience this issue.

As a general note, the error is usually caused by faulty game installations and updates.

This is usually caused by data corruption or frequent Internet disconnections during the download or update process.

Steps to fix unrecognized game client errors

For those of you that have downloaded your games through Steam, you normally shouldn’t need to download the whole game all over again.

You can simply make your Steam client cross-reference your game file’s integrity with their online data. This allows you to fix just the parts of data that may be corrupted, without going through the hassle of downloading the whole game.

1. Check game file integrity

  1. Go to your game Library
  2. Select and right-click Paladins
  3. Click Properties
  4. Go to Local files
  5. Select Verify integrity of game files

2. Uninstall and re-install the game

  1. Go to your game Library
  2. Select and right-click the problematic game
  3. Click Uninstall
  4. Confirm your action by selecting Delete
  5. Head over to Steam and download the game again.

Now, if you’re getting this error on Gears 5, keep in mind that the game has barely been launched and there are bound to be issues with the client.

This is because active development is done into fixing all the bugs, stability and connectivity issues that slipped through the testing phases. And this happens to every newly launched game.

More so, if you continue having these problems despite following the above steps, you should consider downloading games through the Microsoft App Store.
