Steam Machine Officially Launches With a $1,049 Starting Price
Valve has finally launched the Steam Machine, ending months of speculation around its pricing, hardware configurations, and availability strategy. Reservations are now open through Steam, with the entry-level model starting at $1,049 for a version equipped with 512GB of storage.
You can bundle Steam Controller with Steam Machine for $1,128 price
However, that price only gets you the mini gaming PC itself. The Steam Controller is sold separately for $99, although buyers can bundle it with the system for $1,128, effectively lowering the controller’s price to $79.
For players who need more storage, Valve is also offering a 2TB version priced at $1,349. A bundle that includes the Steam Controller raises the price to $1,428. The higher-capacity model also ships with two additional faceplates, giving owners a few extra customization options.
The Steam Machine enters a crowded market at a time when gamers are becoming increasingly sensitive to hardware pricing. Compared to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, Valve’s new system looks expensive on paper.
That being said, Valve isn’t marketing the Steam Machine as a traditional console. The company is positioning it as a compact gaming PC, a category where similarly powerful mini systems often cost significantly more.
According to Valve, rising memory costs have played a major role in the final pricing. The ongoing RAM shortage has not only increased manufacturing expenses but also affected supply availability.
Valve is limiting bots and scalpers
Rather than relying on a first-come, first-served launch, Valve has introduced a randomized reservation system to limit bots and scalpers. Players can register for their preferred configuration through June 25. Once reservations close, Valve will randomize the order and send purchase invitations to selected users. Those who miss the initial wave will automatically join the waitlist.
Valve says the 72-hour purchase window remains in place for invited buyers. Similar measures have also been announced for Steam Controller’s next sale.
