Valve Finalizing Steam Machine Pricing and Release Date for 2026 Launch
Internal talks include a possible short-term loss strategy for hardware sales
Valve’s next wave of Steam hardware is edging closer to launch, but key details like pricing and release timing still remain unclear.
According to a new report from Insider Gaming journalist Mike Straw, the company is finalizing internal decisions around its 2026 hardware lineup, which includes the long-awaited Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame.
Pricing for the Steam Machine is still undecided
Valve has yet to confirm official pricing for any of its upcoming devices. However, a previously leaked early review suggested that the new Steam Controller could cost $99.99. The figure has not been verified, and Valve has not commented publicly on it.
Internally, the company is reportedly exploring aggressive pricing strategies, especially for the Steam Machine. One option under discussion involves selling the hardware at a short-term loss to drive adoption, a tactic often used in the console market.
Delays tied to hardware supply issues
The timeline for Valve’s hardware rollout has faced setbacks due to ongoing memory and storage shortages. These supply constraints have impacted final pricing decisions and delayed announcements.
Despite this, Valve stated earlier this year that it still aims to release the Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame within the first half of 2026. With internal discussions nearing completion, an official reveal may not be far off.
Steam Machine specs aim for balance, not extremes
Leaked details suggest the Steam Machine will feature a semi-custom AMD setup designed to balance performance and cost rather than push high-end boundaries:
- AMD Zen 4 CPU (6 cores / 12 threads)
- RDNA 3 GPU with 28 Compute Units
- 16GB DDR5 system memory
- 8GB GDDR6 VRAM
- Storage options: 512GB or 2TB NVMe
While these specifications place the device below cutting-edge gaming PCs, they could allow Valve to launch sooner and at a more competitive price point.
The broader question now centers on how Valve’s hardware will stack up against upcoming competitors. Rumors around Project Helix suggest performance that could rival high-end gaming PCs, raising expectations for next-generation systems.
For now, the company appears focused on finalizing pricing and launch details, with an announcement expected soon.
