A watermark is usually a pattern, a logo, stamp or other type of design, used on various images, papers or objects, with the main purpose of copyright and to prevent counterfeiting.
For instance, a photograph or a designer, can add its name, in a very transparent color, over its creations, so everyone that finds it can see to whom it belong.
The first watermark was introduces in the year 1282 in Italy. Of course, it existed only on physical papers, created by changing the thickness of the paper to produce a shadow or lightness.
