Windows 11 Build 27898 Bug Brings Back Classic Vista Startup Sound, Again

Enjoy the nostalgia till it lasts

Windows 11’s latest Canary build (27898) quietly reintroduces something unexpected, and oddly nostalgic. Some users are hearing the classic Windows Vista startup sound when booting their PCs, a bug that already made headlines just a few weeks ago.

Microsoft’s preview updates often come with a few rough edges, but this one caught attention because of its sheer throwback value. The Vista chime made its surprise return earlier in July in Dev and Beta builds, leading to speculation that Microsoft was trying to ride the wave of visual nostalgia following Apple’s glossy new macOS 26 update. Microsoft earlier clarified, there was no hidden mocking, as it was just an audio bug.

The company attempted to patch it in later builds, temporarily restoring the proper Windows 11 startup tune introduced in 2021. However, with Build 27898 rolling out to Canary Channel testers this week, the Vista chime is mysteriously back.

As Brandon LeBlanc explained, the fix for the bug didn’t make it into this build due to branching delays. “It’s on its way up now,” he assured users. So, if you’re hearing echoes of Vista in your boot sequence, know that it’s unintentional and temporary.

Still, it’s a funny moment in an otherwise solid update. Beyond audio quirks, Build 27898 includes several notable features, like small taskbar buttons, Quick Machine Recovery options, and context menu improvements. So, enjoy the retro jingle while it lasts; it’ll likely vanish again in the next update.
