Windows 11 stay right side of the risk ad

Windows 11 is finally within reach of becoming the most used desktop operating system. According to StatCounter’s June 2025 report (via Windows Central), it gained 4.44% market share last month, jumping from 43.22% to 47.66%.

At the same time, Windows 10 slipped from 53.19% to 49.03%, a 4.16% drop. That leaves just a 1.4% gap between the two, making a Windows 11 takeover likely as early as next month.

Windows 11 jumps to 47.66%, Windows 10 falls to 49.03%

The change isn’t surprising. Windows 10 is approaching End of Life in 2025, and Microsoft is encouraging (in some instances even warning) users to upgrade. Though Windows 11 has lagged behind in overall adoption since launch, it already leads on gaming platforms like Steam.

StatCounter’s numbers don’t guarantee a trend, but this is one of the clearest signs yet that Windows 11 is on track to take the lead.

Meanwhile, Windows 7 still holds 2.21% of the desktop market. That number has barely moved this year, showing some users remain loyal to the now-retired OS.

Windows 10 may not disappear quickly, though. Microsoft is offering a paid support extension in 2026, which may keep its numbers from collapsing too fast.
