Windows 11 automatic dark mode could finally become a built-in feature, allowing the operating system to switch themes automatically based on time or daylight.

Microsoft has not announced the feature, but references to automatic theme switching have appeared in recent Experimental Windows 11 builds.

Windows enthusiast PhantomOfEarth discovered several hidden strings that point to a more advanced light and dark mode scheduling system.

Windows 11 could switch dark mode on at sunset

One of the hidden strings references a “Schedule auto mode” option.

The setting suggests Windows 11 could automatically switch between light and dark themes according to local sunrise and sunset times.

That would remove the need to manually enable dark mode every evening and switch back to light mode during the day.

Microsoft also appears to be working on a fixed scheduling option for users who want more control.

Hidden strings indicate Windows 11 could let users choose specific start and end times for dark mode.

For example, users could configure Windows to enable dark mode in the evening and return to light mode the following morning.

Theme switching could wait until your PC is idle

Another hidden setting reads “Mode only changes when PC is idle.”

This option could prevent Windows 11 from changing themes while someone actively uses the PC.

Instead, Windows could wait until the computer becomes idle before applying the scheduled light or dark theme.

Automatic dark mode is still unconfirmed

Microsoft has not officially announced automatic dark mode scheduling, and the feature currently appears only through hidden strings in Experimental Windows builds.

Hidden features can change or disappear before Microsoft releases them publicly. However, the number of related settings suggests Microsoft is actively developing a more complete automatic theme-switching system for Windows 11.
