Windows 11 KB5074109 Triggers Reboot Loops, Users Share a Simple Workaround
Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 security update is drawing fresh criticism after users reported serious stability problems following installation.
According to a Reddit thread, update KB5074109 triggers installation failures, random reboots, black screens, and crashes during normal system use.
KB5074109 is linked to crashes and reboots
Several users say their PCs began rebooting unexpectedly after installing KB5074109. One detailed report explains that the system crashed with a dxgmms2.sys BSOD error whenever a GPU-based 3D render started, often after just one to three frames.
After extensive troubleshooting, the user removed KB5074109 and confirmed that the system immediately stabilized. GPU rendering resumed normally, with over an hour of uninterrupted runtime and more than 100 frames rendered without errors.
Other Reddit users echoed similar experiences, reporting crashes during the recovery screen, login screen, and shortly after boot. Some systems briefly loaded Windows before crashing again seconds later.
Games and apps were also affected after the update
Additional reports suggest the issue extends beyond rendering workloads. One user noted that after installing KB5074109 as a security update, the game Arc Raiders consistently crashed, making it unplayable.
While not every system appears affected, the growing number of reports points to a broader compatibility or driver-level issue tied to the update, particularly around graphics handling.
So far, Microsoft has not officially acknowledged problems with KB5074109. Users hope the company will investigate quickly and issue a fix or mitigation guidance.
In related news, Microsoft is already working on a separate Windows 11 shutdown bug caused by update KB5073455, which prevents some PCs from shutting down properly. That issue has received official confirmation, unlike the growing complaints around KB5074109.
