Microsoft had confirmed bunch of issues that were troubling Windows 11 users on version 24G2 and 25H2. While the company has started rolling out Windows 11 26H2 to eligible PCs, those who have installed the KB5124010 update are running into another problem, and this one could be especially annoying for gamers.

Windows 11 26H2 games and apps can crash because of audio

Microsoft has confirmed that some games and applications can crash unexpectedly because of an audio decoding issue that we reported over the weekend. As confirmed by Microsoft, the issue is linked to AC-3, also known as Dolby Digital, audio decoding and affects Windows 11 24H2, 25H2 and the recently released 26H2. Microsoft added the issue to its release notes on October 3 and says it is working on a fix.

According to Microsoft, applications that rely on Windows’ built-in AC-3 decoder might fail to launch or close unexpectedly when certain audio features are used. The issue mainly affects older applications that depend on Windows for Dolby Digital decoding, while most modern apps with their own audio decoders should not be affected.

Microsoft hasn’t provided a dedicated workaround yet. The company says it is working on a resolution that will arrive through a future Windows update. For users who absolutely need affected software to work, uninstalling the KB5124010 update is one option, although doing so also removes the other fixes and improvements included in the update.
