Windows 11 Run Dialog Gets Modern Redesign in Preview Builds
Early version of modern Run dialog shows compact design
Microsoft is working on a modern version of the Windows Run dialog, aiming to align it with the overall Windows 11 design language, as reported by WindowsLatest.
The classic Run tool, accessed via Win + R, has remained largely unchanged for years. Its outdated appearance now stands out against Windows 11’s Fluent Design, prompting Microsoft to refresh the interface while keeping its functionality intact.
Hidden Modern Run Dialog Appears in Preview Builds
A redesigned version of the Run dialog already exists in preview builds, but it remains hidden by default. Users must enable it manually through advanced settings, suggesting Microsoft is still testing the experience before a wider rollout.
The updated interface introduces a slimmer and more compact layout. It resembles a floating search bar rather than a traditional dialog box, signaling a shift toward a cleaner and more minimal design approach.
The icon now follows Fluent Design principles and appears on the left side. The input field sits centered, while the Run button has been moved to the right, creating a more balanced and modern layout.
Microsoft is also considering adding advanced features to the new Run dialog over time, although no specific functionality changes have been confirmed yet.
Dark Mode Support Also in Testing
Alongside the visual redesign, Microsoft is testing dark mode support for the Run dialog. This change does not affect how the tool works but ensures it matches the system-wide theme.
The update focuses entirely on visual consistency, allowing the Run dialog to blend seamlessly with other modern Windows 11 components.
Optional Upgrade, Classic Version Remains
Microsoft plans to keep the modern Run dialog optional. Users who prefer the classic interface will still be able to use it, which helps avoid disruption to existing workflows.
This approach reflects Microsoft’s broader strategy of gradually modernizing legacy components without forcing immediate changes on users.
Part of a Broader Windows 11 Refresh
The redesigned Run dialog is part of a wider effort to improve visual consistency across Windows. Microsoft continues to update older system elements while preserving their core functionality.
In parallel, the company is working on its K2 plan aimed at improving Windows 11, while also rolling out enhancements to Modern Standby to make devices more power efficient.
