Xbox Cloud Gaming will stop working on 2020 Samsung Smart TVs starting November 3, 2026, as Microsoft continues making changes to its cloud gaming service.

Microsoft has recently introduced limits to Xbox Cloud Gaming, restricting how many hours subscribers can play. The decision has frustrated many gamers, although some users won’t be affected by the new limits.

Xbox Cloud Gaming support ends on 2020 Samsung TVs

Starting November 3, Microsoft will no longer support the Xbox app and Xbox Cloud Gaming on Samsung Smart TVs released in 2020, according to Windows Central.

Microsoft told affected users by email that changes to the technology powering Xbox Cloud Gaming are no longer compatible with the operating system available on Samsung’s 2020 TV models.

The change only affects those older TVs. Xbox Cloud Gaming will continue working on Samsung Smart TVs released in 2021 and later.

For owners of 2020 Samsung TVs, the change means they will need another supported device if they want to continue accessing Xbox Cloud Gaming after November 3.

Xbox faces pressure to make cloud gaming sustainable

The changes come as Microsoft faces broader questions about the economics of Xbox and cloud gaming.

Running cloud gaming services requires substantial data center capacity, while Microsoft is also investing heavily in infrastructure for artificial intelligence. That has led to speculation about how the company will balance cloud gaming against other workloads competing for similar infrastructure.

However, Xbox’s recent financial performance adds more context. A financial report published a few months ago showed that Xbox content revenue dropped 10%.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also recently said that Xbox needs the right sustainable business model.

Microsoft therefore appears to be looking closely at how Xbox services operate and where it should allocate resources. Removing support for older hardware could form part of those efficiency efforts, although Microsoft has only attributed the Samsung TV decision to technical compatibility.

For now, Xbox Cloud Gaming remains available across supported Samsung TVs, mobile devices, browsers, consoles, and other compatible hardware, but owners of 2020 Samsung TVs will need to move to another device after November 3.
