Xbox Could Become More Open as Microsoft Explores New Platform Direction

Asha Sharma has shared a new direction for Xbox, signaling a shift toward a more open and flexible gaming ecosystem. In a joint memo with Matt Booty, she emphasized making the platform more accessible to creators while giving players more control over how they play.

The goal is to move beyond the traditional closed console model and toward an ecosystem where customization, creativity, and user-driven experiences take priority.

What “open Xbox” actually means

In an interview with Stephen Totilo of Game File, Sharma clarified that “open” does not necessarily mean immediate structural changes like supporting multiple storefronts. Instead, the focus remains on expanding freedom for both players and creators.

She described a future where users can extend their gameplay experience more easily and developers gain better access to tools and distribution. The idea centers on flexibility rather than a complete overhaul of how Xbox hardware currently operates.

Storefront decisions still under discussion

Sharma acknowledged that discussions have taken place around companies like Epic Games potentially bringing their storefront to future Xbox systems. However, she made it clear that no final decisions have been reached, and the company continues to evaluate its options.

When asked about handheld devices such as the ROG Xbox Ally, Sharma said she was not involved in earlier decisions regarding storefront strategy. She noted that future plans will be shaped through collaboration between internal teams and external partners, suggesting that the direction is still evolving.

A broader shift across Xbox strategy

This push toward openness reflects a wider transformation within Microsoft’s gaming division. The company appears to be rethinking how its platform operates in response to growing demand for flexibility and cross-platform experiences.

At the same time, other Xbox-related developments continue to surface. Discord Nitro subscribers are expected to gain access to a Starter Edition of Xbox Game Pass, signaling further integration between gaming services. Reports also point to internal discussions around platform exclusivity and a branding reset, which could reshape how Xbox positions itself in the market.

Although key implementation details remain undecided, the overall direction suggests a more adaptable Xbox ecosystem. The company is clearly exploring ways to give players more choice while allowing creators to play a bigger role in shaping the platform.
