Xbox One Security Streak Broken After Console Reportedly Hacked for the First Time

Xbox One has reportedly been hacked for the first time, more than a decade after Microsoft officially released the console. That also ends a long stretch during which Microsoft’s console ecosystem remained largely untouched by modders and security researchers.

Xbox One has reportedly been hacked for the first time

Since launching in November 2013, the Xbox One has built a reputation for unusually strong security. For years, the console only allowed officially signed games and backward-compatible titles to run, something Microsoft once described as one of the most secure platforms it had ever launched.

That changed over the weekend when security researcher Markus ‘Doom’ Gaasedelen detailed a new exploit during a presentation at RE//verse Orlando 2026 (embedded below).

“In 2013 some kind of iron curtain came down on security of the Xbox ecosystem,” Gaasedelen said during the talk, noting that the console had remained unhacked for years despite attempts by researchers. The method he used to hack Xbox One, called the Bliss hack, reportedly uses a technique known as voltage glitching.

Rather than modifying reset pins, which is a method once used to hack the Xbox 360, the exploit targets a momentary collapse in the CPU’s voltage rail. Gaasedelen says that he was able to trigger the exploit and run unsigned code on the console. According to the researcher, the vulnerability is effectively unpatchable because it occurs at a hardware level.

If that’s accurate, this could allow users to run homebrew software, alter the system interface, or even install pirated games. However, the exploit appears extremely difficult to execute. Some estimates suggest the success rate may be as low as one in a million attempts (via Tech SK).

Speaking of the Xbox console, let’s not forget that over thirty games are launching on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. You can check the list and release date in our dedicated article.
