Xbox’s Return-to-Office Policy Is Reportedly Getting Stricter, Eligible Employees Must Be On-Site Four Days a Week Starting February 2027
Microsoft is shaking up its office attendance rules for Xbox employees, leaving less room for remote work. Starting February 1, 2027, eligible employees near the company’s Redmond headquarters must work in the office at least four days weekly.
Xbox employees face stricter office attendance rules
According to an exclusive report by The Verge, the new requirement applies to Xbox employees in Washington’s Puget Sound region who live within 50 commuting miles of Studio D. Xbox chief people officer Jacinda Chislum Pearson reportedly outlined the change in an internal memo. She said Microsoft wants to create more opportunities for employees to work together following feedback from staff.
In case you are unaware, Microsoft previously introduced previously introduced a three-day office requirement for employees in 2025. The latest change adds another mandatory office day for eligible Xbox emoloyees. However, the policy does not appear to change established office arrangements at Xbox studios. Employees with existing exemptions will also need to submit them again.
Microsoft wants more in-person collaboration at Xbox
Pearson apparently said thousands of Xbox employees live within commuting distance of Redmond. Working together in person, she argued, makes it easier to review work, resolve problems, and make decisions without scheduling additional meetings.
The memo also emphasizes that office attendance should deliver tangible benefits. Pearson said employees should spend their time reviewing work, solving problems, and playing games together rather than simply taking Teams calls from another location.
That message comes as Xbox continues navigating a major business restructuring. The new in-office policy does not itself confirm additional layoffs or establish a connection between job cuts and attendance requirements.
Who needs to return to the office?
The four-day rule specifically covers eligible Xbox employees within the stated commuting distance of Studio D. It should not automatically be interpreted as a company-wide requirement for every Xbox employee or studio. The policy takes effect on February 1, 2027. For affected workers, it means one fewer regular work-from-home day under the new arrangement.
