Yesterday, Microsoft pushed a bunch of AI-powered features to Paint, Notepad, and Snipping Tool. But now, it’s working on something a little more straightforward for Snipping Tool, and this time, it’s not about AI.
According to @phantomofearth (via Neowin), the Snipping Tool will soon let you save screen recordings as GIFs. Right now, the app only saves recordings as video files. With this change, you’ll be able to export or copy recordings as lightweight GIFs, ideal for quick demos or bug reports.

You’ll also be able to pick between low and high quality, depending on whether you want to shrink the file size or keep things sharp. Once the feature rolls out, a new GIF button will appear in the top-right corner when saving a screen recording. You’ll also get a shortcut: Ctrl + G.
Microsoft hasn’t officially announced this update yet, so there’s no exact timeline. It will likely show up in an upcoming Windows 11 Insider preview build before going public.
If you’re just starting to use Snipping Tool, now might be a good time to customize where it saves your files. Microsoft already offers an easy way to change that.
