YouTube Adds AI-Powered Playlist Creation For Premium Users on Mobile
YouTube is expanding its use of artificial intelligence with a new playlist generation feature designed for Premium subscribers on mobile.
The rollout mirrors a broader industry trend, following similar experiments from Spotify with prompted playlists. Speaking of Spotify, AI Prompted Playlists are now available in the US and Canada.
YouTube AI playlists arrive on iOS and Android
According to TechCrunch, YouTube has begun rolling out AI-powered playlist creation for Premium users on both iOS and Android. The feature allows users to build playlists using text or voice prompts, turning music discovery into a more interactive experience.
Users can describe genres, moods, activities, or even abstract ideas, and YouTube generates a playlist that matches the request. This approach removes the need to manually search for tracks or artists when creating a new playlist.
How to access the new feature
To use AI playlists, users need to open the Library tab in the YouTube app, tap “New,” and select the “AI playlist” option. From there, they can enter a prompt or speak it aloud to start generating a custom playlist instantly.
The feature integrates directly into the existing playlist creation flow, making it easy to try without changing how users normally navigate the app.
YouTube has experimented with AI-driven music features before. In July 2024, the company tested prompt-based custom radio stations in the United States, signaling early interest in generative tools for music discovery. The new playlist feature appears to build on those earlier tests.
Premium push and tighter restrictions
The AI playlist tool also strengthens YouTube’s Premium offering. Recently, the company removed mobile background playback workarounds, making Premium the only way to listen with the screen off. By pairing convenience features with AI-powered discovery, YouTube continues to push Premium as the best way to access its evolving music experience.
As streaming platforms compete on personalization, AI-generated playlists are quickly shifting from experimental features to core subscription benefits.
