YouTube to Overhaul View-Counting System Across Every Video Format Starting August 24

YouTube has officially announced that it is changing its view-counting system across the platform. Starting August 24, every video view will count once playback begins, from the first frame. The change brings regular videos in line with the Shorts system introduced last year. YouTube says creators wanted one clearer metric across different formats.

Every YouTube video will follow the same view-counting rule

Under the new system, a public view starts when the video starts playing. The change applies globally across YouTube and covers all video formats. YouTube previously used different counting methods based on the format. The company says the unified approach should make exposure easier to understand.

Creators may therefore notice view totals surging faster after the change. YouTube specifically expects the new metric to appear wherever public view counts are displayed.

That could also change how creators present their reach to advertisers and sponsors. However, the platform is keeping another metric for measuring deeper viewer engagement.

Engaged views will still matter for analytics and monetization

YouTube will retain the original view metric under the name Engaged views. Creators can find it inside YouTube Analytics through Advanced Mode.

That metric is designed to show how many viewers actually chose to continue watching. It will therefore remain useful for comparing audience engagement.

The monetization rules are not changing with this update. Creator earnings will continue using Engaged Shorts views and Engaged Watch Hours. YouTube also says YPP eligibility will remain unchanged. Its terminology will simply shift toward “qualified Shorts views” and “qualified watch hours.”
