old sticky notes

If you’ve been using the old version of Sticky Notes for work or projects, you might want to be extra careful. The app seems plagued by a persistent error that won’t let users sign in with their personal Microsoft accounts.

The bug prevents users from accessing Sticky Notes using personal accounts, but according to a report on official Windows forums, the app can still be accessed through OneNote using professional accounts on Android phones.

I was successfully using the Sticky Notes app less than 24 hours ago on my work laptop, now I get the same error message on both my work laptop and Home PC. There have been no Windows updates installed on either computer since I last successfully accessed the Sticky Notes app. I’m using Sticky Notes version 6.1.4.0 on both computers. I am signed-in to Windows with my personal Microsoft Account on my home PC and with my work Microsoft Account on my work laptop. I only use my personal Account to sign-in to the Sticky Notes app on both computers.

However, accessing Sticky Notes through OneNote with a personal account prompts the error to show up.

Other users have quickly pointed out that they also experience the issue, although in a different form. Accessing the new version of Sticky Notes (the one present in OneNote) with a personal account seems to work, but when opening the old version using the same account will show the Won’t Sign In Error. Strangely enough, using the old version of the app with any other account seems to work again.

Countless other users have reported similar issues. It’s worth noting that Microsoft only recently released the new Sticky Notes. Besides the fact that it automatically installs itself, it might not be the best idea, as it seems dependent on OneNote, and it’s just a hassle compared to the old version.

Microsoft might be pushing it to users and forcing them to migrate to the new OneNote app when using their accounts.

So what to do, then? Removing, reinstalling the app, or even restarting the PC doesn’t seem to work.

For now, it would be best to try accessing the old Sticky Notes using a different account than your main one. You can always try the new version, as well.

Either way, the old Sticky Notes is still around, and it can still be used, if you prefer that version. However, keep in mind that Microsoft might update it without necessarily letting you know about it.
