Black Ops 7 Backlash Pushes Major Change in COD’s Future
COD Black Ops 7 launched on Xbox Game Pass, but the publisher faces heavy criticism from fans and reviewers. Sales dropped and feedback called out the lack of innovation, pushing the company to rethink its release strategy.
After COD Black Ops 7 Criticism, Activision Will Change Its Release Strategy
According to a report from IGN, the publisher confirmed that it will no longer release Black Ops and Modern Warfare games in consecutive years. Fans saw consecutive Modern Warfare releases in 2022 and 2023, followed by Black Ops entries in 2024 and 2025, which raised concerns about franchise fatigue.
The company acknowledged the backlash directly in a recent statement, admitting that expectations were not met:
“We also know that for some of you, the Franchise has not met your expectations fully. To be very clear, we know what you expect and rest assured we will deliver, and overdeliver, on those expectations as we move forward.”
In the same blog post, the publisher outlined its new direction for the franchise:
“We will no longer do back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games. The reasons are many, but the main one is to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year. We will drive innovation that is meaningful, not incremental.”
This shift aims to restore trust after the poor reception of Black Ops 7, which many players criticized for repetitive gameplay and limited new ideas. The company plans to share more details about future projects when ready.
As part of its response to the backlash around Black Ops 7, Activision also plans to launch a free trial for Black Ops 7, which should take place next week.
