[UPDATED] Windows 11 Update KB5074109 Breaks Azure Virtual Desktop Connections
[UPDATE | 1:55 PM GMT + 1] Reddit user GreyTrainers found a workaround that doesn’t require uninstalling the update. You can bypass the error by using the old Remote Desktop app.
[ORIGINAL ARTICLE] Microsoft has acknowledged a new Windows update issue that breaks connections to Azure Virtual Desktop environments after installing KB5074109.
KB5074109 causes Azure Virtual Desktop authentication failures
According to user reports on Reddit, devices running the update fail to connect when launching Azure Virtual Desktop sessions through the Windows App. When users press the Connect button, the app immediately returns an authentication error message stating: “An authentication error has occurred (Code: 0x80080005)” followed by “Error code: 0x0.”
The issue affects multiple machines across different environments, which points to a broader problem introduced by the update rather than a misconfiguration on individual systems. Administrators report that the error appears consistently after KB5074109 installs, effectively blocking access to virtual desktops.
Uninstalling the update restores access, fix is still pending
A temporary workaround remains available. Uninstalling the KB5074109 update and rebooting the affected Azure Virtual Desktop devices restores normal connectivity. While this approach helps organizations resume work quickly, removing updates can increase security risks if the patch addressed other vulnerabilities.
Microsoft has acknowledged the problem in a Service Health post. The company confirmed it is investigating the authentication failures but has not provided an official fix or an estimated release timeline.

Until a permanent solution becomes available, IT administrators may need to pause deployment of KB5074109 or roll it back on impacted systems to ensure uninterrupted access to Azure Virtual Desktop services.
Windows 10 users also got the KB5073724 update as part of the Extended Security update. It’s also worth mentioning that Microsoft is updating Secure Boot certificates for Windows 11 with the latest update.
