OpenAI Upgrades Prism With Codex CLI and GPT-5.3

OpenAI has stayed busy lately, rolling out GPT-5.3 Instant and the Codex app for Windows. However, that’s not all, and as Neowin writes, the company has pushed a major upgrade to Prism, its AI-powered workspace built for scientific writing and collaboration.

Prism targets researchers who juggle too many separate tools. It brings writing, PDFs, LaTeX work, citations, and team collaboration into one environment, so users can keep research projects in a single place instead of bouncing between apps.

Codex CLI integration turns Prism into a runnable workspace

The headline feature in this update is Codex CLI integration. With it, Prism can run code and tackle computational tasks directly inside the workspace. That means researchers can analyze datasets, compile large LaTeX projects, generate charts and figures, and iterate on drafts without leaving Prism.

OpenAI also positions Prism as a more automated workflow engine. The workspace can run “compile > inspect > revise” loops, where it executes a task, checks the output, and then improves the result in repeated cycles.

Prism moves from GPT-5.2 Thinking to GPT-5.3

When Prism launched in January, it ran on GPT-5.2 Thinking. OpenAI has now upgraded Prism to GPT-5.3, which the company says improves reasoning and overall workflow performance.

With Codex CLI in the mix, Prism can also handle longer, more complex research workflows. OpenAI highlights better context handling and memory compaction for multi-file projects, along with persistent sessions, direct file access, and support for long-running tasks tied to data analysis or document generation.

OpenAI says it plans more research-focused capabilities and deeper integrations with commonly used scientific tools. Prism now supports global access for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users.
