YouTube Premium Gets Auto Speed And On-The-Go Playback Boost
YouTube is testing a pair of helpful new tools to make watching videos easier when you are busy or just trying to save some time. The platform is currently offering its Premium subscribers a chance to try out two experimental settings called On-the-go and Auto speed.
These additions are designed to give users more control over playback and help prevent accidental screen taps while you are moving.
What on-the-go mode does
On-the-go replaces the older Premium controls menu with a simple layout meant for walking or exercising. The goal is to stop you from pressing the wrong button when your phone is in your pocket. The YouTube app now detects movement. If you keep moving for a full minute, it will ask if you want to turn this mode on.
You can also activate it yourself in the settings. Once active, the most useful buttons sit right at the front. You can easily skip video parts, save content for later, or switch between audio and video. This specific feature is only being tested on Android.
How auto speed changes pacing
Auto speed alters how fast a video plays without you needing to adjust anything. When someone speaks slowly, the app speeds up the playback. When the video reaches sections packed with information, it slows back down. This keeps you from missing details while helping you finish videos faster. You can pick a baseline speed from normal up to four times as fast, and the app adjusts from there.
This setting only stays active while the app remains open. If you close YouTube completely, you will need to turn it back on. It works for English videos on iPhone and Android but is disabled for music, live streams, and shorts.
YouTube is running this test for its paying members until April 27th. After that date, the company will decide if it wants to roll these tools out to all users. If you have a Premium account, you can try them now and see if they improve your daily routine.
