Outlook Lite Shutdown Confirmed as Microsoft Pushes Users to Outlook Mobile

Microsoft has confirmed the retirement of Outlook Lite, according to a Microsoft 365 Admin Center message MC1276508. The phase-out is already underway, as the app has not been available for download since October 6, 2025.

Outlook Lite retirement timeline and impact

Outlook Lite will officially reach end of life on May 25, 2026. After this date, the app will still launch, but it will no longer function as expected.

Users will not be able to access their mailbox, and core features such as navigation and email functionality will stop working entirely. Microsoft clarified that this change affects only the app experience, not user accounts or stored data.

All emails, contacts, and account data will remain safe and accessible through supported alternatives.

Users must move to Outlook Mobile

Microsoft is directing all Outlook Lite users to transition to Outlook Mobile as the primary replacement.

Users can switch by downloading Outlook Mobile from the Google Play Store or by using the built-in Upgrade option inside the Outlook Lite app, which redirects to the store page.

The transition ensures continued access to email services without data loss or account changes.

No required admin action, but migration recommended

Microsoft does not require any immediate administrative action for this change. However, the company recommends that organizations take proactive steps to avoid disruption.

Admins should notify users about the retirement, guide them through the migration process, and update internal documentation and helpdesk resources accordingly.

While Outlook Lite is being retired, Microsoft continues to maintain other Outlook versions. The company recently resolved an issue affecting the Teams add-in in Classic Outlook, along with a bug that prevented some users from sending emails.
