Meta has named CRED founder Kunal Shah as the next leader of WhatsApp, replacing Will Cathcart after nearly seven years at the helm of the world’s largest messaging platform. The move marks a major shift for a service used by more than two billion people and hints Meta’s growing focus on India as a critical market for its future goals.

Meta appoints Indian entrepreneur and fintech founder Kunal Shah as the new global head and CEO of WhatsApp

Shah is best known for building CRED into one of India’s most recognizable fintech brands and for previously founding digital payments platform FreeCharge, which was acquired in 2015. Besides operating startups, he has built a reputation as one of India’s most influential angel investors and technology voices.

The leadership transition comes at a pivotal moment for WhatsApp. Under Cathcart, the platform expanded beyond messaging with encrypted backups, business tools, AI integrations, in-app advertising initiatives, and support for additional devices such as the iPad. Meta is now under pressure to turn WhatsApp into a larger business engine without disrupting the simplicity that made it indispensable worldwide.

In a statement announcing the appointment, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, “Kunal Shah will join Meta as WhatsApp’s next leader. Kunal built CRED into one of India’s most important technology companies, and he brings the kind of builder mentality and global perspective that will serve him well in running the world’s biggest messaging app. I look forward to working with Kunal to continue to make WhatsApp the best service for billions of people and millions of businesses.”

Meanwhile, Cathcart will remain at Meta and transition to a new role focused on developing next-generation products. The announcement also comes alongside Meta’s reported $900 million investment in CRED, further strengthening ties between the social media giant and India’s rapidly growing digital economy.
