Microsoft to Upgrade Copilot in Excel with Smarter Multi-Agent Web Search
It’s been more than three years since Microsoft added Copilot to Excel. Along the years, the company added bunch of new Copilot features to Excel in order to make things easier for users out there. For example, earlier this year, Microsoft announced wave 3 of 365 Copilot with agentic AI to Excel, Word, and more. That’s not all; the company has added Agent Mode, new =COPILOT function to Excel, and Copilot chat late last year.
Excel’s Copilot will soon double-check web results before answering you
Now, it seems Microsoft is getting another Copilot feature ready for Excel that can help with complex web search. We spotted the feature on the official Microsoft 365 Roadmap, which suggests that the upcoming feature introduces a multi-agent web search system for Copilot in Excel.
So, what that exactly means for Excel users? Well, rather than relying on a single search process, Copilot will coordinate multiple AI agents working in parallel to gather information, compare results across different sources, verify findings, and even revisit unanswered questions before generating a final response.
The wordings Microsoft has used to describe the feature hints that it will improve complex web-based research performed directly inside Excel. According to Microsoft’s roadmap description, the upgraded system should deliver faster responses while also producing more complete and reliable answers by validating information instead of returning the first available result.
In real-life scenario, this could make Copilot more useful when researching business data, market trends, financial information, or other topics that require information from multiple sources.
As of now, Microsoft has marked the feature as “In Development.” The company says it will be available across Excel with Microsoft 365 Copilot and is currently scheduled to start rolling out in July 2026.
