Microsoft Announces Multibillion-Dollar AI Deal With Mistral to Expand Europe's AI Future

Microsoft has announced a major expansion of its partnership with French AI startup Mistral. The new agreement goes beyond adding AI models to Azure. It also includes a multibillion-dollar investment to expand AI infrastructure across Europe while giving businesses more control over where they run AI workloads.

Microsoft brings Mistral’s latest AI models to Azure and Copilot

As part of the partnership, Mistral Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 are now available through Microsoft Foundry. Developers can use the models to build AI applications, automate workflows, and process documents using Microsoft’s development platform.

Microsoft has also added Mistral Medium 3.5 to Copilot Studio. Businesses can now choose Mistral’s model while keeping Microsoft’s security, governance, and management tools.

Customers can deploy the models across Azure, Azure Local, or fully disconnected environments. Microsoft says the approach helps organizations meet security, compliance, and data sovereignty requirements without changing how they build AI applications.

Microsoft is also expanding Europe’s AI infrastructure

The companies also announced a multibillion-dollar agreement to expand AI compute capacity across Europe. Mistral will deploy thousands of NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs to support AI training and inference. Microsoft will use part of that infrastructure to increase Azure AI capacity and meet growing customer demand.

The partnership also includes joint customer programs, proof-of-concept funding, Azure credits, and technical workshops to help businesses adopt AI faster.

Microsoft says the expanded partnership will primarily benefit industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, finance, and critical infrastructure, where organizations often require greater operational control over AI deployments while meeting strict regulatory requirements.
