If you ever found the existence of Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot as two separate service weird, there’s some good news. Microsoft is reportedly about to get rid of that confusion. The company has announced that it will merge its consumer and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps into one experience (via The Verge). As of now, the change is scheduled to rol out in mid-September, bringing personal, work, and school accounts under one roof.

One Copilot app will handle more accounts

The new app will let users switch between personal, work, and school accounts through an account switcher. Microsoft says personal and work environments will remain separated, with no data flowing between them.

Users will also get access to email, calendars, and cloud services through their connected accounts. Microsoft 365 subscribers will retain higher usage limits and access to Word, Excel, Outlook, and related files.

Free users will still get standard Copilot features. These include conversations, image creation, file uploads, questions, and voice interactions. Existing chat history and content will generally move across during the transition.

The rollout will differ depending on how users currently access Copilot. Desktop and web users should receive guidance, while mobile users may need to install an updated application.

Microsoft is also retiring several Copilot features

Microsoft is retiring Group Chats, Podcasts, and Deep Research from standard Copilot after August 18. Existing Group Chat messages and generated podcasts will become inaccessible unless users save them beforehand. Deep Research reports will remain available, but new reports will require Microsoft 365 Premium through the Researcher tool.

For users running Microsoft 365 Copilot with work or school accounts, the icon and branding will change. Meanwhile the overall experience should otherwise remain largely familiar
