Microsoft’s New OneDrive Sync Engine Makes Syncing Faster

Microsoft is rolling out a new native sync engine for OneDrive on macOS, promising faster synchronization, lower resource usage, and a better Finder experience.

The update follows several other recent OneDrive changes. Microsoft recently rolled out the OneDrive Photos app by mistake before adding an uninstall option following backlash.

Microsoft detailed the macOS sync changes in Message Center advisory MC1458483. The company says the new Native Sync Engine builds on performance improvements that first reached OneDrive Insiders in June 2026.

OneDrive should sync faster while using fewer resources

The biggest changes focus on performance and efficiency.

Microsoft says the Native Sync Engine will provide faster initial synchronization when users first connect their OneDrive accounts. It should also process subsequent file changes more quickly.

The new architecture also brings faster initial synchronization, quicker processing of file changes, reduced CPU and memory usage, improved battery efficiency, and better overall sync reliability.

OneDrive files will appear immediately in Finder

Microsoft is also changing how OneDrive content appears inside macOS Finder.

Files and folders will become immediately visible and browsable, eliminating the need to wait for individual folder contents to load before navigating deeper into a OneDrive directory.

The update also changes how SharePoint libraries appear in Finder.

Organizations that synchronize multiple SharePoint libraries will see each library listed as a separate location in the Finder sidebar. Currently, macOS groups those libraries beneath a single organization entry.

That change should make it easier for users to move between frequently accessed SharePoint locations without navigating through the organization’s main OneDrive entry first.

External drive support is getting better

Microsoft is also improving OneDrive support for eligible external storage devices.

The company says the new sync engine will improve the experience for users who store OneDrive content on supported external drives, though availability will still depend on whether the drive meets Microsoft’s requirements.

Microsoft will migrate users automatically

Users and IT administrators will not need to manually enable the new engine.

Microsoft will automatically migrate customers through an update to the OneDrive sync app. The migration will run in the background, and Microsoft says it should not interrupt normal workflows.

Files On-Demand and online-only files will continue working as before, so users should not need to download their cloud files again as part of the migration.

Microsoft also says administrators do not need to take any action before deployment begins.

Rollout starts in August and continues through November

Microsoft plans to begin rolling out the OneDrive Native Sync Engine later in August 2026.

The company expects to complete the deployment by November 2026, meaning some organizations may not see the changes immediately.

The update represents a significant architectural change for OneDrive on macOS, but Microsoft is designing the migration to happen largely without users noticing it. The most visible differences should instead come from faster syncing, lower system resource usage, and quicker access to OneDrive content through Finder.
