ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox Now Face a Major New EU Compliance Deadline
ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox have been designated as Very Large services under the European Union’s Digital Services Act, bringing the platforms under stricter rules for content, advertising, algorithms, and user safety.
The European Commission designated ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox after determining that each service meets the threshold of at least 45 million average monthly users in the EU.
ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox face January 2027 deadline
The three services have until January 2027 to comply with the additional obligations that apply to Very Large Online Platforms and Very Large Online Search Engines under the DSA.
The requirements cover areas such as content moderation, targeted advertising, transparency, and the way platforms assess risks created by their algorithms and services.
Companies must identify systemic risks associated with their platforms and take steps to reduce them. The Commission specifically highlighted illegal content and potential harm to users.
Platforms must also assess and address risks affecting minors, users’ physical and mental well-being, fundamental rights, electoral processes, and public security.
The European Commission’s designation means regulators can apply the DSA’s tougher oversight requirements directly to the three services.
ChatGPT faces tougher scrutiny over ads and systemic risks
For OpenAI, ChatGPT’s designation as a Very Large Online Search Engine, or VLOSE, brings additional requirements around assessing and mitigating systemic risks.
That scrutiny will also extend to advertising on ChatGPT.
The designation comes shortly after OpenAI revealed that ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate as the company expanded advertising to more markets.
Under the tougher DSA requirements, OpenAI will need to assess risks associated with its advertising systems alongside other issues involving algorithms, user safety, and illegal content.
Roblox faces additional child safety oversight
Roblox will also face increased EU scrutiny, particularly around risks affecting younger users.
The platform has previously attracted criticism over child safety and has introduced new measures aimed at limiting potentially unsafe interactions.
Those changes include age-based account features and restrictions on direct messaging following the rollout of age verification.
Roblox’s designation as a Very Large Online Platform means it will have to formally assess risks to minors and demonstrate how its safeguards reduce them.
Microsoft, Google, Apple, and other major technology companies have already faced scrutiny under the regulation.
ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox now join that group, with January 2027 marking the key deadline for meeting their additional DSA obligations.
