Microsoft Brings AI-Powered Copilot Search to OneDrive and SharePoint
Microsoft is bringing Copilot Search directly to OneDrive and SharePoint, allowing users to find files using natural language and access AI-generated summaries without leaving either service.
According to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap (ID 573696), the feature is currently in development, with a preview planned for October 2026 and a broader rollout scheduled to begin in January 2027.
Copilot Search will let users describe what they are looking for instead of relying on exact filenames or keywords. For example, users could search for documents related to a particular project or topic and receive relevant results alongside AI-generated summaries.

The new search experience will include filters to help users narrow down results and locate specific files or information.
Users will also be able to transfer search results directly to Copilot to continue working with the content, whether they need additional information or want to analyze a document.
These capabilities already exist within Microsoft 365 Copilot, but the integration will bring them directly into OneDrive and SharePoint, making them accessible within the services where users store and manage their files.
Microsoft plans to introduce Copilot Search through the web versions of OneDrive and SharePoint first. The company has not detailed availability for desktop or mobile apps.
The update is part of Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to expand AI-powered productivity features across Microsoft 365.
Microsoft is also bringing secure PDF annotations to OneDrive and SharePoint, allowing users to annotate sensitivity-protected documents.
Separately, the company has made Copilot four times faster while reducing token usage by 30% and is preparing to let Microsoft Teams users play OneDrive videos directly during events.
