Microsoft OneDrive is getting a major upgrade, and this time, it is about much more than storing files in the cloud. The company is bringing Copilot deeper into file management, simplifying sharing, and adding AI-powered photo tools. Several changes also target users working across Windows, Mac, web, and mobile.

Microsoft OneDrive gets smarter with new Copilot features

Copilot in OneDrive can now analyze multiple spreadsheets, generate charts, identify trends, and organize cluttered project folders. It can also turn existing documents and research into interactive HTML reports, giving users another way to transform files into finished work.

Microsoft is also introducing custom Copilot skills. Users can save repeatable workflows as Markdown files, allowing Copilot to follow the same process again. A new Prompt Gallery should also help users discover ways to work with their files.

OneDrive is also improving how users handle HTML and Markdown files. They can edit HTML with a live preview and collaborate through comments and real-time presence. Markdown files gain rich-text editing, autosave, and collaborative editing while retaining their native format.

OneDrive makes file management and sharing easier

Microsoft is refreshing OneDrive navigation with a Libraries view for accessing SharePoint libraries, Teams, and favorite sites. Users can also search for libraries and lists, while shared folders added through OneDrive can appear in a dedicated Shortcuts folder.

Another notable change is support for syncing up to one million items on Windows and macOS, even on devices with just 8GB of RAM. Microsoft is also improving handling of longer file paths to reduce synchronization errors.

Sharing is getting a useful change, too. Hero Links provide one link per file or folder by default, with updated permissions applying to the same URL. Expiring access controls are still in development.

OneDrive gets a serious AI upgrade for photos

Microsoft is bringing natural-language photo search, AI-powered editing, map-based browsing, and curated Moments to OneDrive. Copilot can also turn collections of photos into slideshows, while a new Create experience supports collages, cards, and other shareable content.

Some features are rolling out now, while others will release over the coming months. Microsoft is also exploring future collaboration with AI agents and tools that identify oversharing risks and help fix file permissions.

In other OneDrive news, Microsoft is cleaning up the OneDrive right-click menu in Windows 11 to make it less cluttered. The company is also bringing AI-powered Copilot Search to OneDrive and SharePoint, alongside secure PDF annotations to improve document collaboration.
