Spotify is reportedly working on a new AI music feature that could let listeners remix their favorite songs for an extra monthly fee. The feature may release in early 2027, sometime around the Grammy Awards in February.

Spotify wants listeners to become music remixers

According to the Financial Times, Spotify is targeting the first quarter of 2027 for the launch (via Notebookcheck). The company is reportedly considering an additional $4 to $5 monthly charge on top of existing subscriptions. Neither the release window nor pricing has been finalized, according to the news outlet.

The proposed tool would let subscribers create alternative versions of existing songs. For example, listeners could convert a folk track into dance music or make a song sound like another artist covered it. Interestingly, this would differ from AI music generators such as Suno, which create entirely new songs from prompts.

Spotify’s approach would reportedly focus on licensed music from artists who voluntarily participate. The company has already signed agreements with Universal Music Group, Merlin, Kobalt, and Believe. However, negotiations with Sony Music and Warner Music are reportedly ongoing.

Artist consent could decide Spotify’s next move

Spotify says the feature will create another revenue stream for artists and songwriters. Under the proposed system, royalties from fan-created remixes would flow back to the original rights holders. The company is also reportedly developing playlist integration for these creations. Their streams could count toward the original songs’ chart totals, potentially encouraging artists to participate.

That said, securing support from major contemporary stars remains a challenge. As of writing, Spotify has not confirmed the reported launch date or additional fee.
