In case you didn’t know, Microsoft has its own in-house Linux distribution that it uses for various purposes.

It seems that this distribution went through some changes recently, so in today’s guide we’re going to take a closer look at what’s now with this distro.

Microsoft rebrands CBL-Mariner Linux

That’s right, Microsoft has its Linux distribution, known as CBL-Mariner, which stands for Common Base Linux. However, as Phoronix reports, that’s not its name anymore.

The distribution is changing its name to Azure Linux as evidenced by its new name on the GitHub repository. This coincides with the release of the new 2.0.20240301 version.

It’s not just the name, the code has been updated as well, and now instead of MARINER_VERSION, you can find AZL_VERSION.

So far, the reason for this change remains unknown, and maybe Microsoft has some big plans for Azure Linux in the future.

Speaking of Azure systems, Azure Sphere OS Version 24.03 is available for testing, so you might want to give it a try.
