During the Build 2026 Conference, Microsoft not just unveiled Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, but also announced the Project Solara. In case you missed the livestream, it is a brand-new platform built around AI agents instead of conventional software. Microsoft is now talking about entirely new categories of devices designed specifically for agent-powered experiences.

Project Solara is Microsoft’s big bet on AI-Powered devices

Microsoft believes the next major shift in computing won’t be driven by apps people open, but by agents people invoke. Rather than jumping between programs, clicking menus, and navigating interfaces, users could increasingly rely on AI agents that understand context, coordinate tasks, and work across multiple systems automatically.

To support that vision, Microsoft created Project Solara, which it describes as a chip-to-cloud platform capable of powering a new generation of “agent-first” devices. The company says these products are being designed around voice, vision, touch, and glanceable interactions rather than traditional app-centric experiences.

Microsoft even revealed two early concept devices. The first is a wearable badge-style device featuring a touchscreen, camera, microphone array, fingerprint authentication, and 5G connectivity. The second is a compact desk companion that provides quick access to AI agents and can even connect to Windows 365 when attached to an external display.

Speaking of Windows 365, Project Solara is heavily linked into Microsoft’s broader AI ecosystem. The platform supports Microsoft 365 Copilot, Researcher, Facilitator, Priority Agent, GitHub Copilot, and future third-party agents through an open architecture.

That being said, Microsoft is careful not to promise an immediate revolution. Project Solara remains in its early stages, with pilot programs planned alongside companies including CVS Health, Best Buy, Target, Levi’s, and AccuWeather.
