Bungie’s upcoming blockbuster title, Marathon, has been trending lately, and thankfully for all the right reasons. Earlier this week, a leak from the Xbox Store revealed the release date of the game along with its trailer. Since it wasn’t a fake trailer, Bungie had no option but to officially release the trailer and announce the release date.

Marathon pre-orders triggered an unexpected Destiny 2 install

Marathon is coming on March 5, 2026. Now that pre-orders have begun, the game appears to be breaking Steam’s top sellers chart. That being said, some Marathon players got more than they bargained for after hitting the pre-order button on Steam. Funnily enough, pre-loading Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter on Steam reportedly began installing Destiny 2 as well.

The mix-up caught the attention of many, as this wasn’t happening to just one player. Thankfully, the issue didn’t last long. In a post shared on X, spotted by Eurogamer, the official Marathon dev team confirmed that the bug has now been fixed. According to the studio, pre-ordering Marathon will no longer trigger an unexpected Destiny 2 install.

Another issue fixed, too

In addition, Bungie also confirmed it has fixed another related issue where Collector’s Edition owners were running into errors when activating their Steam codes. Despite the hiccup, the Marathon craze doesn’t seem to have slowed at all. It’s currently ranking just below heavily discounted AAA titles and long-standing hits like Counter-Strike 2 and Arc Raiders.

Let’s not forget that Sony and Bungie have also officially partnered to launch a Marathon Limited Edition DualSense controller. Sadly, it’s limited to the US, for now, and costs $169.99.

Have you pre-ordered Marathon? Did the Destiny 2 install affect you, too? Let us know in the comments below. Also, here’s the pre-order trailer for you to savor.
