Bungie Reportedly Preparing for Major Layoffs as Destiny 2's Roadmap Coming to an End

It seems things are not looking great inside Bungie right now as a new report suggest that the studio behind Marathon is preparing for another wave of major layoffs once Destiny 2 reaches the end of its current content roadmap next month.

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Bungie currently has no major project ready for large portions of the Destiny 2 team after the game’s final planned update arrives on June 9. The report claims Bungie is now focusing heavily on Marathon, the studio’s extraction shooter that launched earlier this year. However, despite massive marketing and years of hype, the game reportedly failed to meet internal sales expectations after release.

Unlike Destiny 2, Bungie still appears committed to supporting Marathon long-term in hopes the player base eventually grows over time. In recent months, multiple developers working on Destiny were also reportedly moved over to support the newer title. That being said, the bigger issue seems to be what comes after Destiny 2. Schreier reports that Bungie currently is not entering full production on a Destiny 3 project anytime soon.

Internally, teams are reportedly pitching new concepts, including possible Destiny-related ideas, but nothing has been officially approved yet. In simple words, Bungie reportedly does not have a guaranteed next major project lined up right now.

Unfortunately, this also arrives during one of the roughest periods gaming has seen in years. Layoffs, game cancellations, and studio restructuring continue hitting major publishers across the industry throughout 2026.
