Infinity Ward and Activision have finally announced the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The new game officially launches on October 23, 2026, across Xbox Series X|S, PC, Steam, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, and even Nintendo Switch 2. Yes, Modern Warfare 4 is the first Call of Duty game to launch on Switch 2.

But the bigger story here is the setting of the game. In an interview with XBOX, Associate Design Director Alex Norris and Narrative Director Jeff Negus share new details on the next Call of Duty campaign.

Modern Warfare 4 is taking Call of Duty into Korea

Rather than another Middle East conflict or generic global terrorist plot, Modern Warfare 4 reportedly throws players directly into a massive war surrounding North and South Korea. And from what Infinity Ward has shared so far, the studio wants this campaign feeling grounded, tense, and ripped straight from current geopolitical headlines.

The story picks up shortly after the events of Modern Warfare III (2023), with Captain Price apparently becoming a far more dangerous and unpredictable version of himself after going rogue during the previous game. Infinity Ward says the campaign stretches across multiple locations including Korea, Paris, and New York City. However, Korea clearly is the main focus.

The studio repeatedly emphasized authenticity during its deep-dive reveal, including Korean voice performances, cultural consultants, dialect coaching, and even tiny environmental details inside convenience stores and military zones.

Infinity Ward wants massive cinematic battles again

On paper, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is doubling down on large-scale blockbuster missions. Infinity Ward says players can expect amphibious assaults, armored warfare, air support, city-wide combat, and heavily scripted cinematic sequences across the campaign. One mission even features large vehicle chases through Paris rendered with near one-to-one realism.

That being said, the developers also stressed they still want missions feeling personal through squad interactions and character-driven storytelling rather than just nonstop action and explosions. That’s why Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 brings several new Korean and American squad members alongside returning Task Force 141 characters.
