ChatGPT Rolls Out Age Prediction Model to Improve Safety For Younger Users
OpenAI has been busy developing its first AI-focused device, but the company is also tightening safety controls inside ChatGPT by rolling out a new age prediction system.
According to BleepingComputer, OpenAI has started deploying an age detection model designed to estimate whether a user is under 18 and automatically apply stricter safety rules.
ChatGPT gets a built-in age prediction system
The new model aims to reduce potential misuse by younger users and limit access to adult or high-risk content. OpenAI says the system analyzes behavioral signals such as conversation topics, interaction patterns, and even the times of day ChatGPT is used.
Because the model relies on usage patterns rather than direct age input, OpenAI acknowledges that it may sometimes misclassify adults as teenagers, especially when behavior resembles that of younger users.
Content restrictions and age verification options
When ChatGPT flags a user as under 18, access to certain categories becomes limited. Restricted topics can include graphic violence, gore, risky viral challenges, and content that promotes unhealthy behaviors.
Users incorrectly identified as minors can verify their age to regain full access. OpenAI allows verification through a live selfie or by submitting a government-issued ID. Once verified, the account restores the standard adult experience.
Even with age prediction enabled, OpenAI says users can still learn, create, and ask questions, though within tighter safety boundaries.
The age prediction rollout is not the only update in progress. OpenAI continues testing new tasks and workflow features aimed at expanding how users interact with ChatGPT.
At the same time, reports suggest OpenAI could face losses of up to $14 billion this year due to high infrastructure and computing costs. Despite that, the company recently launched a limited promotion offering free access to ChatGPT Plus for select users, signaling continued efforts to grow adoption while refining platform safety.
