Copilot's chat history will be expanded to more than 90 days

As you might know, Copilot was widely released to all Microsoft products, including Windows 11, and Windows 10, over the last months of 2023. The AI tool, which is capable of powerful features, such as text composing, summarization, and many more, also currently stores conversations in a chat history meant to last for about 90 days.

However, for unknown reasons, many users have been encountering an issue where their Copilot chat history doesn’t show up, or it doesn’t seem to be working properly.

It seems that older conversations are no longer available. For example, I wanted to review a chat from December 1, but I could not find it. However, in August, I was able to access a chat from June. Is this a bug or a feature? 🙁

The question was addressed to Mikhail Parakhin, one of Microsoft’s lead engineers on the Copilot project, to which he responded that every user can access the chats on Copilot as old as 90 days, and there are plans to expand the time period.

We keep those for 90 days currently and plan to expand, so might be a technical issue. I forwarded to the team.

So users should expect to access older chats on Copilot starting sometime over the next months of 2024. As for the technical issues regarding the access to existing chats within the 90-day time limit, the Microsoft executive forwarded the issue to the Copilot team, and a solution should be released in the next few days or weeks.

Copilot in 2024: What to expect?

There are big things coming for Copilot in 2024. Not only the AI tool will get an expanded chat history, and it will be fully integrated into all Microsoft products, but the Redmond-based tech giant is also debuting the Copilot keys to mark 2024 as the year of computing AI.

The new Copilot key will be present on the new Windows laptops and Windows-oriented keyboards, and when pressed, it will open the AI tool on the Windows device.

Users will have to be logged on to their Microsoft accounts to be able to use and enjoy the new Copilot key, and the Redmond-based tech giant says manufacturers will release keyboards with the new key sometime in the spring of 2024, so we’re expecting to see them widely available starting March.

For those eager to see how the new Copilot key looks on Windows devices and laptops, the Redmond-based tech giant will preview a few devices at the upcoming CES 2024, which is happening this week.

Over the coming days leading up to and at CES, you will start to see the Copilot key on many of the new Windows 11 PCs from our ecosystem partners, with availability beginning later this month through Spring, including on upcoming Surface devices.

However, it’s not the end of the road for big announcements regarding Copilot. 2024 also means Copilot Studio, a platform where users can build their own customizable Copilots for personal or commercial use. An array of improvements is coming to Copilot for Microsoft 365, including the integration with OneDrive, and Outlook (both the new version and the classic version, as well).

So it’s going to be a big year for Copilot, and AI.
