How can I delete corrupted files on my PC?

1. Use Command Prompt

  1. Press the Win key to open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt and run it as an administrator.
  3. Type the below command and press Enter. Del /F /Q /A < file path > (In place of the file path, you have to type the location of the corrupted files that you wish to delete)
    • /F means to force delete files
    • /Q means to delete read-only files,
    • /A means to select files with the archiving attribute.
  4. Reboot your computer.

2. Delete files in Safe Mode

  1. Press the Win + I keys to open the Settings menu.
  2. Click on Recovery on the right side.
  3. Hit the Restart now button next to Advanced Startup to boot into Windows Recovery Environment.
  4. Select Troubleshoot.
  5. Choose Advanced options.

    • F4 – Enable Safe Mode
    • F5 – Enable Safe Mode with Networking
    • F6 – Enable Safe Mode with Command Prompt

3. Close the Explorer process

  1. Press the Ctrl + Shift + Esc buttons to open the Task Manager.
  2. Locate the Windows Explorer process, select it, and hit the Restart task button at the top.
  3. Relaunch Windows Explorer and try deleting the files.

Sometimes an issue with the Windows Explorer or the File Explorer process can cause multiple issues on your PC. In such a case, we would suggest you restart the File Explorer process and check if this resolves the issue or corrupted file not deleting.

4. Fix your hard drive

  1. Press the Win key to open the Start menu.
  2. Type the command prompt and run it as an administrator.
  3. Type the below command and press Enter. CHKDSK *: /f /rchkdsk (Replace * with the drive letter that you wish to repair)
    • /f – fix any errors it detected.
    • /r – Locate bad sectors on the drive and try to recover it
  4. Reboot your computer.
