Growing up, the games we played on web browsers were pretty simple, to say the least. In the old days, you’d go to Cartoon Network’s website and start up on of their old Flash titles (remember those?)

In the years since those old Flash games, technology has moved forward leaps and bounds and now we have some pretty good games available on web browsers. Flash has since been discontinued, with HTML5 making up the main programming language behind the internet.

HTML5 alongside Javascript has become the main programming language for browser games with tons of games from different genres blessing our computer screens.

For this guide, in particular, we’re going to focus on games available for the Opera browser.

Opera GX

The most used browser for online games with the customization and network limiter features.

Can you play games on the Opera browser?

Yes, you can. In fact, Opera GX has a ton of exclusive browser games on GX.games. It’s a website that houses these titles. Many of these games are free to play but are still high quality.

Right now, there are several games listed as free to play for a short time. Titles like Sheepo and Totemlands will go back to being paid this upcoming September. Opera even allows you to learn how to make your own game and upload them.

For this guide, we’re going to tackle several types of games. We’ll list out the best games that are exclusive to Opera GX as well as titles you can play on the normal Opera browser.

What are the best games for Opera browser?

What are the best free games on GX games?

Operius – Simple and addicting

Starting off the list is Operius, a game that you can play right now on Opera GX. All you have to do is enter opera://operius into the address bar of Opera GX and hit Enter on your keyboard.

Normally, you can only play Operius if you’re experiencing internet issues, but that command unlocks it. Also, make sure you have the latest version of Opera GX as the title is not available on the older version.

So what’s Operius? It’s a lot like the old Atari game, Tempest. You’re a spaceship just shooting 3D shapes as you go through a tunnel at high speeds and collecting powerups. It is simple, but really addicting.

Tunnel of Doom – Mish-mash of lots of different genres

Next up is Tunnel of Doom, a free to play game on Opera GX. It’s on other platforms, but you’ll have to pay. The fact that the game is free for Opera users is a major plus in our book.

Tunnel of Doom is a mish-mash of lots of different genres. It’s actually a little tough to describe it. You play as a woman named Angel, whose husband is trapped inside a collapsed mine. She decides to venture into the mine, brave the dangers, and save her husband.

It’s a mixture of Legend of Zelda and a tower defense game as you can lay down traps and obstacles from invading zombies. Tunnel of Doom is a pretty cool game and we recommend you check it out.

Friday Night Funkin’ GMR – Great soundtrack

Friday Night Funkin’ GMR is a remake of the original game from Newgrounds. It’s the exact same title, just better suited for Opera GX.

It’s a rhythm game where you control a character simply named Boyfriend who has to defeat a bunch of guys who try to steal your girlfriend, named Girlfriend. The names aren’t creative, but that’s the joke.

It’s a lot like Dance Dance Revolution where you have to mirror your opponent by either pressing the arrow keys or the W, A, S, and D keys. As you progress through the game, it gets more difficult.

Awesome little game with a great soundtrack.

Notice me Leena-senpai! – It’s time to defend the castle

If you’ve ever played Plants vs Zombies, you’ve essentially played this game. Notice me Leena-senpai is a tower defense game where you have to help the princess named Leena defend the castle from monsters.

This game is still a work in progress so it’s not complete yet. The developers are hard at work at improving the game and adding new characters. The characters in Leena-senpai are more fantasy based.

You got a swordswoman slicing zombies, mages shooting magic from the back, and archers firing at ghosts. Winning is simple. Defend the castle from zombies, dragons, and ghost samurai.

You can only let three in. The final game is slated for a December 2023 release so look to it when it launches.

Trial by Night – You can unlock special abilities

Trial by Night is a mix between a tower defense game and a survival horror game. You play as a mage and you’re tasked with defending a village at night from a horde of ghouls, zombies, and other monsters.

The goal of the game is to reach 15 nights of survival in order to win. During the daytime, you buy all the defense you’ll need to survive the monsters. And you can unlock special abilities by buying certain building.

The stable, for example, lets you dash across the field. Other spells include launching a blast from afar or absorbing enemy health. A very cool yet simple game with engaging gameplay; highly recommended.

Although we did experience the game freezing on us a few times so be mindful of that.

Treasures of Tristenwald – Fast and fluid

GX.games has a decent amount of rouge-like titles and the best one Treasures of Tristenwald. If you’ve ever played Hollow Knight or a Metroid game, you’ll feel right at home here.

You play as a vampire lady traversing the forest of Tristenwald looking for treasure. Wielding a giant purple sword, you hop from platform to platform, exploring caves, and looking for treasure.

Gameplay is fast and fluid. You dash around slicing up faries, activating a demon mode to collect as many gems as possible. Easily of the best games on the platform.

BlastNet – All about reaching a high score

Rounding out the list of the best free games on Opera GX’s browser is BlastNet. Certain titles have a big community behind them with people trying to reach a high score and BlastNest is one of those games.

The game has you play as a green diamond trying to destroy the enemy’s red shapes; that’s it. That’s all you have to do: survive multiple waves to try and get a high score. But it’s so addictive.

The music is awesome and you get multiple powerups to make the game feel more exciting. Beware of playing this because you might waste hours of the day. We definitely did.

What are other free games on Opera GX?

Cave Story – Classic game

Outside of GX.games, there are tons of classic games available for browsers. One of our favorites is Cave Story. There are different versions of this game available on the internet, but this is more of a demake.

The music nor the graphics are as good as the base game, but it still brings over the fun gameplay. But what is it? Well, Cave Story is a Metroid style RPG title where you play as a cute robot who finds himself stuck in a cave.

The robot is looking for a way to escape the cave and ends up discovering a race of dog people who need his help. Cave Story is a very cute and relaxing game. A blast to play.

Doom – First-person shooter

You can’t have a list of classic games without mentioning the big granddaddy of all first-person shooters: Doom. You can play the title on Dos.zone and you don’t have to pay a single dollar.

Specifically, this is Ultimate Doom which adds a fourth episode, Thy Flesh Consumed. For the fourth episode, entire levels were made by people from the fan community.

Unfortunately, there is no multiplayer with this version of Doom; as far we can tell. It may be possible to play with others but we couldn’t figure it out. That said, it’s still one of the best versions of Doom you play on the internet.

Pac-man – Really fun choice

Who among us doesn’t love a good game of Pac-man? It’s easy to pick up, you don’t have to be a big game to go a few rounds, and it’s very relaxing (for the most part).

There are several ways you can play Pac-man including a Google Doodle version of the game where the titular character eats pellets around the Google logo. But we recommend the Pacman.live version.

You can play the original Pac-man plus Ms. Pac-man. And there’s a new game starring a character named Cookie-man. Not sure who this other character is, but it’s still fun.

โ‡’ Play Pac-man

Slither.io – Compete with other people

A list of the best browser games would not be complete without mentioning Slither.io. A reimagining of the classic arcade game Snake, Slither.io has you play as a brightly colored worm who needs to eat these pellets.

The goal of the game is to create the biggest possible worm and get the highest score. Like some of the other entries on this list, it’s simple yet addicting. What we find the most fun is competing with other people.

If you’re lucky, you can grow to a massive size, trap other players by circling around and rack up a ton of points. The highest score we’ve seen is over 200,000 points; can you beat that?

โ‡’ Play Slither.io

Spelunky – Unique experience

When Spelunky came out back in 2008, it was the first of a kind. Games like Treasures of Tristenwald owe a lot to Splunky because it showed the world that side scrolling roguelikes were possible.

In Spelunky, you play as an unknown treasure hunter descending underground trying to collect as much treasure as you can while avoiding traps and enemies. Each level is randomly generated meaning everyone has a unique experience.

No two playthroughs are the same and it keeps the game fresh no matter how many times you play. With endless replayability and amazing gameplay, it’s no wonder many consider Spelunky to be one of the best games ever made.

Wordle – Puzzle-oriented game

Stepping away from traditional video games, we have Wordle. Sometimes you want to take a break from fast-paced action games and want something more puzzle-oriented.

World is easy to play. You have six guesses to figure out a five-letter word. Each time you incorrectly guess a word, you’ll get a clue as seen by highlighted letters. If the letter is green, you got it in the right place.

If the letter is yellow, it means that the letter is the word but located somewhere else. When Wordle first came out, it exploded in popularity. While the hype has settled, the game still has a ton of fans.

Hordes.io – Get ready for a challenge

MMORPGs are a popular game genre with titles like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV having millions of concurrent players. But to play those games, you’ll have to buy the game and keep playing with a subscription.

If you want to play an MMORPG without paying a cent for a subscription, you should try out Hordes.Io. The game is currently in beta and continues to live because of an active community. Players help build the world they’re in with frequent updates.

You can play as either a warrior, mage, shaman, or archer. Player vs player combat is a major draw as it can happen at any time. Don’t let the simplistic style fool you; it’s anything but easy. Give it a shot if you want a challenge.

Quick, Draw! – Nice distraction

Quick, Draw! is a pretty interesting game created by Google. It’s similar to Pictionary where an AI has to guess what you’re drawing. It can be as simple as an object or more abstract like an idea.

You only have 20 seconds to complete a drawing according to a random prompt given to you by the website. Unfortunately, you can’t pick your own word. And each time you play, the AI gets smarter.

And at the end of the round, you’re given the results so you can see how well you stack up against the AI. Not a complex game, but a nice distraction.

What are the best paid games?

Doomed to Hell – Addictive and fun

Rogue-like games are very popular on GX.games. Going back to the exclusive platform, Doomed to Hell is a shooter where you play as Rose, a skeleton trapped in hell who needs to fight off a horde of demons to escape.

It’s a lot like Treasures of Tristenwald where you fight off against a bunch of monsters trying to get a high score. You get money to buy weapons to get demons faster. By killing demons faster, you get more money for more weapons and it goes on forever.

But because this game is so action-packed, addictive, and fun, you don’t mind doing the same thing forever. The experience is its own reward.

Granblue Fantasy – Turn-based RPG

Gacha games are a popular type of mobile game that implement loot box mechanics into their gameplay. Many of them are RPGs and lock characters behind their loot box mechanic. Most of them are exclusive to mobile devices, but Granblue Fantasy actually has a browser version.

It’s a turn-based RPG that has a group of adventurers go on a globe-trotting journey to defend the evil empire and save the world from giant monsters. You don’t have a cent to play this game, but spending money does speed up the process.

The meaningful process can be rather slow if you don’t pay. But if you pay, you’re rewarded with a fantastic story and beautiful art.

Runescape – Over 200 million accounts

If you liked Hordes.io but are looking for something more, you should try out Runescape. It’s 20-plus years since its launch, the title has grown to house over 200 million accounts.

Many grew up playing Runescape and its popularity hasn’t slowed down at all. It’s been given more life thanks to all of the Twitch streamers who played the game and exposed it to more people.

Funny enough, the game itself doesn’t have much of a story. It’s all about entering this vast medieval world filled with dragons and wizards and simply exploring.

The game itself is free, but you can pay for an optional membership that unlocks more content like skills and new quests.

Forge of Empires – Mix between SimCity and Clash of Clans

Forge of Empires is an epic free-to-play browser game that’s like a mix between SimCity and Clash of Clans. You start with what essentially are cavemen and you begin to create an empire them, hence the name of the game.

The world goes through all of the major eras of human history and into a fictional future. You go through the Middle Ages to the Industrial Age and into the far-off future of colonizing space.

Along the way, you’ll be attacked by invaders or you can do the invading yourself. The game is free-to-play, but you can purchase resources for your empire with real money.

Catan Universe – Board game

And for the final entry on the best browser games for Opera GX, we have Catan Universe which, as you can see in the image, is a board game. The neat thing about Catan Universe is that it’s cross-platform.

This means that you can play the game with people on other devices and services. You can play with someone on an iPad while someone else uses the browser version. There’s even one for Steam.

It’s similar to Forge of Empires. You start off with a settlement that you’re tasked with growing. And with that settlement, you are off and conquer the other players.

The game can be pretty tricky and require some luck, but nothing is more satisfying than managing that total conquest.

What is the best browser to use for gaming?

Well, Opera GX is certainly the best browser for gaming. As we just showed you, GX.games has a massive library of games exclusive to the browser. On top of that, the browser comes with features that enhance gaming such as reducing CPU usage.

Besides Opera GX, Chrome is also pretty good. It’s not a gaming browser but does have features that gamers would like. For example, it has a built-in password manager for protecting your Runescape account and you can sync passwords to other devices.

Firefox is also pretty good thanks to its security features. Vivaldi is recommended for its advanced tab management.
