Search is starting to look very different in 2026, and not everyone seems happy about it. As major platforms race toward AI-generated answers, DuckDuckGo is doing the exact opposite. The privacy-focused search engine has just introduced new tools that make its AI-free search experience easier to access, and the timing doesn’t appear accidental.

The company announced new browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox that automatically set DuckDuckGo’s dedicated “no AI” search experience as the default. Once enabled, users are redirected to a version of DuckDuckGo that removes AI-generated answers, AI chat prompts, and significantly reduces AI-created images from search results.

This comes as Google has made some of the biggest changes related to Search. Rather than prioritizing traditional website links, the Mountain View giant is increasingly pushing AI-generated overviews and conversational search experiences. While Google sees AI as the future of search, many appears to be looking for an exit route.

DuckDuckGo says interest in AI-free Search is climbing fast

According to DuckDuckGo, traffic to its no-AI search page has surged since Google’s latest search overhaul. The company says visits jumped nearly 30% week-over-week, while app installations in the United States also climbed sharply.

One of the most notable figures were reported on May 28, when traffic to the AI-free search experience reportedly hit its highest level yet. DuckDuckGo claims visits have remained well above normal levels since then, suggesting the trend may be more than a short-term reaction.

That said, DuckDuckGo is not positioning itself as an anti-AI company. The company still offers its own AI chatbot experience and even sells premium subscriptions that include access to advanced AI models.
