web3

web3 is a relatively new concept in the tech industry that has captured the public’s attention, and with it, the interest of bigger companies, such as Microsoft. But the idea behind it might not benefit the Redmond-based tech giant in certain areas. In other areas, though, Microsoft might win big by investing in this technology.

web3 is an idea of a new iteration of the World Wide Web which would include decentralization blockchain technologies as well as token-based currencies and economics.

Microsoft has shown an interest in the technology, especially due to web3’s AI integration: artificial intelligence is an important key in web3 technologies because it can be used to curate and generate content tailored to each user.

The Redmond-based tech giant has been investing a lot of resources in AI, and currently, the company is probably the best AI developer in the world. The web3 technology would require a lot of AI assistance, and generally, it will be an AI-driven Internet.

Microsoft could see an opportunity here, to become the most important player on the market. Considering the other giants, such as Google, Amazon, or Meta, already have a sort of monopoly in their respective fields, Microsoft sometimes struggles with it, and the competition in the OS market is fierce.

However, the Redmond-based tech giant might want to partner up with Edge & Node, a company that is now working on a new web3 network. Edge & Node has been also supporting The Graph, which many see as the Google of web3, and now it’s trying to develop a web3 network, using, of course, AI.

In an interview with TechCrunch, Tegan Kline, CEO and co-founder of the company, says:

Web3 is still being built, we’re still working on building this decentralized internet that is censorship resistant. So, the innovation is happening today and I believe that this is where the internet will go, this will be the next evolution of the internet. It’s a growing industry as opposed to a shrinking one. The one thing that’s really important about AI is that it’s all about data. There’s a saying that who rules the data rules the world, and so it really is important that data is not owned and controlled by any one company, especially in the AI space.

However, Kline says the AI must be open-source, as in they must be trained using only open-source methods. She thinks that otherwise, web3 could end up being the same as the other versions of the Internet.

Microsoft should support the company, as the Redmond-based tech giant also believes in the open-source community to develop AI technologies. However, it must also take the pledge that it won’t try to monopolize the new version of the Internet when it gets there.
